Beyond the Soul’s Meridian, September 29, 2026
If one cannot say anything nice, must one hold their tongue?
This question is derived from an ancient fable of Aesop that involved Minerva and her companion, the Wise Owl, who is a creature that can see clearly into the world of Shadows. In the story, Minerva beckons the owl to speak truthfully and give an honest appraisal of the state of the world. At first, the owl feigns ignorance, but under threat of the pain of her displeasure, it is forced to answer.
In doing so, the owl flies up and perches upon Minerva’s shoulder, whispering into her ear,
“In a world that has become so depraved, those who have eyes to perceive the truth are esteemed for holding their tongue.”
In my generation we were taught that holding one’s tongue is a necessary measure that should be heeded. Generations are not arbitrary as there is a general ranking derived from multiple variables that sociologists use to categorize people into specific herds. There is some truth in this method which is based upon empirical observations related to the cultural times and its conditions that we must face. There are unseen powers beyond our consciousness that create the very conditions used to label us. Whether one is aware or not, all influential members of our society are held accountable to these hidden entities of control.
